I teach because I love it, especially interacting with my students.
I have been teaching at Notre Dame Preparatory School since September 1980. One of the main reasons I have stayed at the school is that I strongly believe in the value of single sex education during the high school years, especially for girls. During my years at NDP I have taught phases 2 through 5 in subject areas from Algebra I through Calculus to students in grades nine through twelve. This range of experience across the mathematics curriculum and the student body has provided me with insight into the needs and abilities of the girls as they progress through the math program.
Before coming to NDP, I taught at Maryvale Preparatory School where I taught a variety of math classes and also physics. I taught summer school at Gilman School during the early and mid 1990’s. During the summer of 1996 I taught at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in their SANDALS Program. This program was designed to encourage girls to pursue math and science degrees in college.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Notre Dame with a major in mathematics and a minor in secondary education. I have my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Towson University and more than 30 credits beyond that degree. In addition I have attended numerous workshops and in-service programs dealing with incorporating graphing calculators and computers into the instruction of mathematics. I was also a member of the Governor’s Academy of Mathematics and Science Teachers in 1996.
While at Notre Dame I have received several awards for teaching excellence and dedication to teaching. These include the Mildred Motsko Hunt Award, the Cardinal’s Award and the Hyacinths for the Soul award. I have also been nominated by several students throughout my career for inclusion in Who’s Who among High School Teachers.
I try to keep myself current with the latest trends because I feel,
“Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” (John Cotton Dana)
